With only 16 days left until the big race, our friends in Michigan are busy training on the frozen lakes of the Lower and Upper Peninsulas. We will be joining the I-500 board meeting tomorrow night as all the final details are combed over. Soon, men on snow machines will be squaring off at 120 miles per hour.
The first race day of the I-500 was February 8th, 1969. The race lasted 13 hours and 42 minutes and drew over 10,000 spectators in 16 degree weather. Dan Planck of Davidson, riding a Ski Doo, finally crossed the finish line at 11:42pm to become the first winner of the enduro race.
We are knee deep in snow in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan! We are bundled up near the home of the I-500, an International snowmobiling race of 500 laps around a 1-mile track, that starts time trials on Tuesday, February 2nd. With only 22 days left until race day, we are following two drivers and their teams as they test out their sleds and make the final preparations for the race. Check out the race at http://www.i-500.com.
